Relentless Reading

The Gr. 5 boys are deeply engrossed in a novel study on Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. They are learning to think critically and give reasons to support their answers. “Was Brian scared? How do you know?” The book is about a boy, Brian, who faces challenges from nature, like bears, porcupines, dehydration, and starvation after being in a plane crash; all with only his trusty hatchet to help him. The novel explores themes of positive thinking and perseverance. These tie in nicely to our 5Rs – especially being Resourceful, Resilient and Relentless. It is also on subject mater that the boys can get really excited about – survival skills and being in the outdoors and nature.
