Grade 7 & 8 Tournament Highlights

Debating Big Questions

Our Grade 7 and 8 boys took part in our 4th annual Debate Tournament, tackling the timely and thought-provoking resolution: Be it resolved that the government of Canada should ban access to social media for children under 16 years of age.

In preparation, students researched the issue in depth, developing contentions for both the affirmative and negative sides. Each argument included clear reasoning, thoughtful elaboration, and credible evidence to support their claims. As part of the research process, students also learned how to craft effective AI prompts using Gemini to refine and enhance their own ideas — an important skill in today’s digital landscape.

The tournament showcased vigorous yet respectful debate, as students demonstrated confidence, composure, and intellectual agility. Throughout the day, they practiced and strengthened key skills, including:

  • Active listening to thoughtfully refute opponents’ arguments
  • Strategic questioning during back-and-forth discussion periods
  • Public speaking through structured, persuasive speeches
  • Perspective-taking to identify bias, test assumptions, and consider unintended consequences
  • Research proficiency, including the ability to use AI tools responsibly and effectively

Congratulations to our award recipients:

  • Top Speaker: Jake D.
  • First Place Team: Jake & Charlie
  • Second Place Team: Nolan & Joe
  • Third Place Team: Helios & Elvin

We are proud of all participants for engaging deeply with a complex issue and for demonstrating the critical thinking, courage, and character that meaningful debate requires.
